Hey all, i was away recently so left the show in the capable hands of my
colleague Dave Bryan, who i'm sure treated you to two hours of great music.
For this show i fancied a big mix of styles so i managed to play an hour of
Jazz, Soul , Blues, Ska and some Scottish post punk also.
Here is the tracklisting...
1. Jesus and Mary chain- Cracking Up *
2. Orange Juice- Blue Boy
3. The War on Drugs- A Needle in the eye # 16 **
4. The Diamonds- The Stroll
5. The Dells- Lil' Darlin'
6. Charles Mingus- Slop
7. Dionne Warwick- Don't make me over ***
8. David Brubeck- Kathy's Waltz
9. Desmond Dekker- 007
10.The Wailers- Love & Affection
11.Dawn Penn- Are you there?
12.Leo Kottke- Watermelon
13.Flatt & Scruggs- Foggy Mountain Breakdown ****
14.Paul Butterfield Blues Band- Mystery train
15.Leo Kottke, Peter Lang and John Fahey- Sunflower River Blues
* A great single from 1997 proving could still get it together when they wanted to, this is a sleazy sneering piece of music with a filthy riff driving it all.
**I have been listening to this band's Debut LP 'Wagonwheel Blues' just about daily
since i got my hands on it a few months ago. The Lead vocalist and main songwriter
Adam Granduciel knows what he's at, there are some corkers on there- a nice blend
of Springsteen, Dylan and My Bloody Valentine which are just some of the sounds that spring to mind.
***I do not know how this piece of music has escaped my attention for so long, this
is Dionne Warwick's first sinlge of note in a great run of collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Hal David. I was struck by the passion and commitment in her vocal, a voice i would usually associate with reserved beauty pleads for her right to be who she wants to be and rightfully so.
****A standard in the Bluegrass cannon, Banjo legend Earl Scruggs who wrote this song in 1949 still performs today in his mid 80's, a master of his instrumnet he can still showcase breath-taking technique when the occasion calls it.
